There are so many weird and wonderful career paths out there, and somehow life did lead me to become a photographer. Of course, this isn’t for everyone, but there are a lot of people out there who love photography and would love to do this as a career. If this is something that interests you as more than just a hobby you probably want to think about what you can do to become the best possible photographer.
There is so much more to this than simply pointing a camera at something and pressing click. If you want to make sure you carve out a successful career from doing this you have to make sure you have a plan. You need to treat this like a true business and make sure you are doing what you can to be more successful. These are some excellent hacks you need to use to help you become the best photographer you can possibly be.
Learn the Basics
It is really important to make sure you learn the basics of photography, and what is involved in taking a good picture. I mean, I started out by taking pictures of my family and travels. And I used to use all kinds of crazy filters at the beginning. I thought I take decent pictures, but after taking some photography courses, I started to notice all the small things. A tree coming out of someones’ head, colours a bit off, and I am not even talking about the times I used all these crazy green/yellow/etc filters you can find on amateur editing software like Picasa. So learning the basics is essential. You would be surprised by how many people actually don’t bother doing this. Until you have learned and perfected the basics you can’t hope to improve and become a more professional photographer, so make this the first step in your process.
If you want to improve the way you take pictures the best way of doing this is to photograph everything. Don’t restrict yourself to only one or two things – try your hand at every different type of thing before you chose your niche. You will find that you have more of an eye for certain things and that you are better at photographing certain things. This is a good way of helping you make the right decisions moving forward. I have been a freelance photographer for a year now and this is the first season I do wedding photoshoots. I would never have thought that I could be the one to do this kind of photography work, but yet I have been surprised by how fun and exciting it can be. So even if you have been a photographer for some time now, you can still find new fields to explore. Take a picture of your dog, car, family members, breakfast coffee. Practice makes perfect as they say.
Take a Picture Every Day
Also, try to make sure you photograph something on a daily basis. You need to make sure you take at least one picture every day because this is going to help you improve and experience different ways of photographing. You should try to keep up with it and make sure you are taking at least one photo daily because you will continue to improve and increase your experiences as a result. There is a camera by your side almost all the time (yes, I mean your smartphone camera). So. Just. Do. It.
Refine Your Editing Skills
All professional photographers need to have an eye for taking a picture, but they also have to be able to edit effectively as well. This means you have to do as much as you can to work on refining and improving your editing skills where possible. One of the best ways of doing this is to check out Photoshop classes by Training Connection. These are a great way of making sure you improve the way you edit pictures, and that you get the best possible outcome for your photos once they’ve been taken. You can start out with using Lightroom or any other editing software you want as long as you keep improving your skills each day. You will be surprised by how much it can improve your photography work. I promise that if you do this, you are gonna take one look at the pictures you took and edited 2 years ago and be ashamed. You will see how much better they have become.
Market Yourself Effectively
It is also incredibly important to market yourself effectively. As a professional photographer, the likelihood is that you are going to be working for yourself. This means it is so important to be able to market yourself well and drum up business. There are a lot of photography marketing tricks out there that you need to use, and the more you can embrace these the better it will be for you and your business in the long run. You are your own boss, but each boss can fail and experience huge loses. So don’t be afraid to experiment even when it comes to marketing. I would suggest learning from the best. Pick 2 or 3 photographers whose work inspires you and do a minor research of how they market themselves. Check out their website and social media sites. And compare what all the successful photographers have in common.
If you are serious about photography, here is an eBook that might help you:
Buy a Good Camera
You have to make sure you have the right equipment if you want to be successful, and this means buying a good camera. (You can also rent a camera for a test run before buying one.) It should not be the first thing on your list, but as you start to become better and actually get paid to take pictures, you are gonna have to upgrade. It is absolutely essential that you have the right camera and this might mean shelling out a little more than you were planning. Honestly, you need to make sure you do this if you are serious about improving your ability as a photographer.
You Need a Website
A website is also something that is an absolute must because you’re not going to be able to showcase your work properly otherwise. It is a place where all things come together. You can send people from your website to your social media sites and the other way around, but a website is a place where everything connects. There are loads of things you might like to think about when it comes to boosting your profile, but the website is one of the most effective these days. Make sure you do your best to set one up, and there will be plenty of time
As you can imagine, there are a lot of things to consider if you are serious about being an excellent photographer. You have to do as much as you can to improve the way you do this, and it is so important to follow these hacks as much as you can. Think about what is involved in the process of becoming a professional photographer, and what you can do to improve your chances.
Here is to success!
